Alastair was born on 20th August 1989 at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in Hammersmith. He was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital the following day for emergency surgery due to meconium ileus (intestinal obstruction). He then spent the following six weeks in hospital and was diagnosed with CF.
Treatment of CF began early with the daily rigmarole of physiotherapy, nebulisers and vast quantities of pill popping. Thanks to the medical team at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Alastair’s condition has been well monitored and, apart from the odd blip, he continues to thrive!
Alastair’s family moved out of London in 1996 and are living near Burwash in East Sussex. He went to school at Finton House in Wandsworth before they moved, and then to Vinehall School, Robertsbridge and on to Tonbridge School (2002-07).
Alastair has many interests, in particular drama and cricket. Running has been a more recent addition to the list and, as ever, Alastair, who is not one to do things in half measures, has literally thrown himself into it. In April 2008, Alastair completed his first Flora London Marathon in a time of 4 hours 11 minutes. He successfully raised more than £12,000 for the CF Trust and in the run up to the race was featured in The Daily Express, BBC News, BBC Radio and Southern FM.
This year he is attempting to repeat that achievement. Training has begun in earnest and, fortunate to be offered a place to run for the CF team in London on Sunday 26th April, he is giving it his all!
He is keen to raise as much money as possible for the CF Trust, as well as raising the awareness of CF and demonstrating how determined and positive people with CF are.
